Platonism and Christianity · An Essay in Interpretation

IN PRESS

At the dawn of the modern age, the so-called “Platonism of the Fathers” gave rise in Europe to a long and fruitful debate. In this volume Enrico Peroli offers a historical reconstruction of that decisive controversy and shows to what extent the Platonic tradition was determinant in the genesis and development of central themes of Christian reflection. Anthropology and spiritual theology, the conception of the divine ground of reality and the doctrine of the Trinity, the idea of the person and the notion of freedom form the core of the book, which restores the dialogue that early Christian theology entered into with Platonism in a sustained dialectic of reception and transformation of Greek philosophy. From that exchange —which Peroli recounts with rigour and restraint— emerged one of the most influential cultural processes in the spiritual history of the West.
